Fire Keeper

I grew up in the shadow of Ishi, last of the California Yahi, but it would be half a century before I would understand the imperative of diversity among the races and cultures of the human species. Trained as a biologist and ecologist, my cultural awareness matured over fifteen years in graduate school and research in Ontario, Canada.  Returning to the U.S., I was privileged to serve for 30 years in a great research university in the upper midwest. A multitude of students and professional associates furthered my education continuously through retirement in 2009. With the support of friends and family, I find that a Professor Emeritus can find peace and comfort in a pastoral region of the Driftless Area.  I hope that this blog will allow me to continue to celebrate the boundless opportunity and commensurate obligations that Americans enjoy in governing and understanding themselves.

  1. How do I try to instill the values of fairness, community, decency and acceptance to the youth I work with daily? I really do believe it takes a community to raise a child, and I hope that everyday there is something I have said to a student that gives them cause for thought, and helps enable them to become unique and positive individuals, capable of feeling a sense of self worth and evaluating their own behaviors and prejudices. If he/she can be positive about decisions and successes, I can hope it passes on to the next, and the next. Equality and fairness? I can try.......
